Dear Phran Klub,
Minor adjustments can have enormous impacts.
Old-fashioned radios are a classic example. By twisting a round knob, listeners manually scan the airwaves for pleasing exhalations from faraway disc jockeys. Fine tuning, which requires only a gentle fingertip exertion, means the difference between grinding static + beautiful music.
Last fall, I started dedicating all my Fridays to my artwork. In the grand scheme of things, it was a small change. I switched one weekday's focus. I still commit the bulk of my time to the nonprofit I run, The Good Listening Project; still maintain enough income to pay the rent; and continue to enjoy the respect and approval of most of the “squares” in my life (shout-out to my squares!).
Yet, since the change, I’ve made far more art, incl. producing a glossy 120-page art book from scratch, doing dozens of paintings, creating three brand-new games, recording my first TEDx talk (stay tuned!), and have built more relationships with other artists than any previous year. What’s more, rather than all this subtracting from my nonprofit work, it’s been additive. The energy I get from each feeds into the other.
My workweek adjustment was relatively minor. The payoffs have been major. The Phrantone, now at 126 subscribers, is one of them. I hope you’ve been enjoying it. I know I have.
