PHRANTONE 04-2022

Dear Phran Klub,

There are three basic components to my creative practice: Consume, Process, and Generate. Like heat, fuel, and oxygen, the three elements of the “fire triangle,” they’re interdependent. They support each other in continuous non-hierarchical collaboration.

The three components work like this:

  1. Consuming involves taking in content from outside sources. Appreciating the art of others is part of it, which means curation plays an important role. I place rich content in my path by selecting the magazines I subscribe to, the music I listen to, and the movies I spend my time watching.

  2. Processing requires protecting blank space. This allows my brain to assess, incorporate, and remix what I have consumed. A long walk with no headphones is great for this.

  3. Generating is what happens when I make time to create. Because of what I’ve consumed and how I’ve processed it, I’m able to generate content that feels fresh + meaningful to me.

Want my advice? Recognize that you are consuming, processing, and generating all day long, and honor your creative mind by curating, protecting, and making time. Your fire will burn brighter if you do.
